Spokane International Airport - All Information on Spokane International Airport (GEG)
Spokane Airport
9000 W Airport Dr, Spokane, Washington 99224, USAFacts and History about Spokane Airport
Spokane International Airport (IATA: GEG), commonly known as Spokane Airport, is a commercial airport located approximately 11 km southwest of downtown Spokane, Washington, USA.
The principal airport serves the Inland Northwest, which comprises thirty counties and includes areas such as Spokane and the Tri-Cities, all of which are in Eastern Washington, as well as Coeur d'Alene, which is in North Idaho.
GEG is an abbreviation taken from the airport's last name, Geiger Field, which was named in honor of Major Harold Geiger (1884–1927). It is included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems that will be implemented by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for 2017–2021. It falls under the category of a critical small-hub commercial service facility.
Three primary buildings make up the passenger terminal complex at Spokane Airport. Ground Transportation Middle is located to the north, Concourses A and B are located in the center, and Concourse C can be found to the southwest.
The three buildings are located directly next to one another and are linked. However, the two concourse structures are not connected with an airside connector on the sterile side. To get from Concourse A-B to Concourse C, travelers must travel through the landside, non-sterile circulation.
History of Spokane Airport
Before 1941, it was known as Sunset Field; after the War Department purchased it from the county, it was renamed Geiger Field (thus the IATA code GEG) after Major Harold Geiger, a pioneer in Army aviation. He was killed in an accident in 1927.
Geiger Field was an important training site for the Second Air Force during World War II. It served as a group training airfield for B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombardment units. Boeing, located in Seattle, provided the company with brand-new airplanes.
In addition, it served as a maintenance and supply depot for aircraft and was used by Air Technical Service Command; Felts Field and Deer Park Airport were auxiliary facilities.
The first-ever formal fire defense training course was developed by General Hap Arnold at Geiger Field in Washington state in the year 1943. Late in 1945, Geiger was put out of business, given to the War Assets Administration (WAA), and eventually handed to Spokane County, where it was transformed into a commercial airport.
During the Cold War, this airfield served as a base for the United States Air Force Air Defense Command units responsible for the Hanford Nuclear Reservation and Grand Coulee Dam air defense. Fairchild Air Force Base is located approximately 7 kilometers west of the Spokane Air Depot, which was constructed in 1942.
In 1946, it took over Felts Field as Spokane's municipal airport. In 1960, after the Surplus Property Act gave Spokane Geiger Field to the city of Spokane and Air Canada began providing service to Calgary, it was given its current name. Before that, it was known as Felts Field. In 1946, it replaced Felts Field.
The 4702d Defense Wing relocated to the airfield in November 1972. Until the early 1960s, the Air Force continued to use it. At that time, the 84th Fighter Group was responsible for operating Convair F-106 Delta Dart interceptors. Geiger Field continues to be designated with the code GEG for its airport.
Concourse A and B complex opened its doors to the public in 1965. Warren C. Heylman and William Trogdon were responsible for designing the modern Concourse A and B complex, which opened its doors in 1965.
Since the 1970s, occasional non-stop flights to southern California have been among the first to be suspended whenever the economic recession.
About Spokane, Washington
The Inland Northwest region is centered in the Greater Spokane, Washington, Area. It encompasses all of Eastern Washington and North Idaho. Historically, this region has also been referred to as the Inland Empire. Another name for this region is the Inland Northwest.
Depending on how broadly one defines "Inland Northwest," the region may also include parts of western Montana and northeastern Oregon. Alternately, more stringent definitions could result in the exclusion of Central Washington and Idaho County, Idaho.
The British Columbia Interior, located to the north of the border in Canada and is the inland component of the larger Pacific Northwest, is its equivalent region in the United States. The area surrounding Spokane and Coeur d'Alene, as well as the Tri-Cities, is home to critical metropolitan centers.
Multiple suggestions have been made for the Inland Northwest to become politically unified. In the middle and later half of the 1860s, there was a proposal centered on Lewiston in northern Idaho to form a Columbia Territory in the region from portions of what is now eastern Washington, north Idaho, and western Montana. This territory would have encompassed parts of all three of these states.
In 1901, a second suggestion was made to create the state of Lincoln by joining the eastern region of Washington State and the Idaho Panhandle. In the late 1920s, a third suggestion gained traction, which suggested that the territory comprised east Washington, northern Idaho, and western Montana up to the Continental Divide.
Across significant portions of the region, agriculture is the primary economic driver. Wheat and lentils are two of the most important crops produced in the Palouse.
Columbia Basin Project enabled irrigating farms on 670,000 acres of the Columbia Plateau. The Yakima Valley is one of the most important wine-producing regions in the country.
It is also the largest producer of hops in the United States. The only other state in the country that produces more wine than Washington is California. There are 20 American Viticultural Areas in Washington, with 19 in Eastern Washington.
Spokane Coeur d'Alene combined statistical area, officially referred to as the Spokane Valley–Coeur d'Alene, WA–ID CSA as established by the United States Census Bureau, is a combined statistical includes both the Spokane metropolitan region and the Coeur d'Alene metropolitan area.
Spokane and Coeur d'Alene, the largest satellite of the CSA, are divided by suburbs that mostly follow the line of the Spokane Valley and Rathdrum Prairie. The CSA is centered by Spokane, while Coeur d'Alene is the largest satellite.
